As the industry develops new purpose-built solutions to meet growing storage needs, IT managers continue to rely on low-capacity HDDs that are more cost-effective while still providing the performance and reliability needed for traditional data centre applications. The Ultrastar® DC HC320 is designed for workloads of up to 550 TB per year. It offers 8 TB1 and meets the economy and access requirements of many traditional IT workloads. Low capacity hard drives also ease architectural constraints. It is part of the mid-capacity DC HC300 series and is suitable for traditional storage and server applications as well as decentralised and scalable computing applications, including block and file storage architectures. With a fast 7,200 rpm, the Ultrastar DC HC320 offers high performance at a low cost - ideal for organisations with strict budget constraints. The Ultrastar DC HC320 is available with SATA (6 Gbps) or SAS (12 Gbps) interface in 512e9 format.
Technological innovation boosts efficiency and performance of traditional IT systems
The Ultrastar DC HC320 is based on a proven 5-disc platform with CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) technology, air-fill and 3.5-inch form factor. Compared to the previous generation, Ultrastar 7K6000, the DC HC320 delivers 33% more capacity, has up to 12% more performance and uses media with a slightly larger diameter. It utilises a second generation two-stage micro actuator for precise positioning of the read/write head for improved drive performance. The increase in write performance is also supported by the Western Digital Media Cache architecture. This technology provides a large cache area on the drive, improving drive reliability and data integrity in the event of a sudden power failure. In addition, both the SATA and SAS models with non-volatile memory (NVC) based on flash technology ensure faster writing.
