An 18 TB hard drive offers 29% more storage capacity in the same form factor compared to a 14 TB version. Higher capacity drives enable lower capital expenditure for data centres as less hardware is required and lower system costs are incurred than with lower capacity drives. Helium-filled hard drives with low power consumption and high reliability reduce energy and maintenance costs, helping to reduce operating expenses. For example, by using 18TB drives instead of 14TB drives, 22% fewer racks are required and idle power consumption is reduced by 12% per TB. This leads to considerable savings in the total cost of ownership in the data centre.

The Ultrastar DC HC550 establishes a new generation of hard drives with innovative technologies and nine magnetic discs. It offers 18 TB of storage capacity and combines technologies for higher data density with increased performance and reduced energy consumption.
