Raspberry Pi does not include a hardware analog-to-digital converter, so the external ADC (such as the MCP3008) plays an important role in converting continuous time-varying analog signals into discrete-time digital signals so that they can easily be read by the digital devices.

ADC is a common accessory for Raspberry Pi. Nowadays many cheap MCUs have built-in ADC, so this 8-channel ADC is based on STM32F030, which is a cost-effective, low-power ARM Cortex M0 MCU. Seeed Studio breakout 8 channels ADC from the MCU, and integrates 4 analog Grove connectors so that you can also use analog Grove modules with it.
